Package Description

Exposure therapy is a gold-standard treatment for anxiety and related disorders that is typically incorporated into psychotherapeutic treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or provided as a stand-alone treatment. While highly effective for those who complete treatment (drop-out rates for exposure therapy can be up to 30%), adapting exposure therapy to reflect emerging scientific evidence may enhance outcomes. Exposure therapies are inherently psychophysiological: 1) they rely upon the intentional, structured activation of psychophysiological anxiety to allow for new, therapeutic learning to occur, 2) maladaptive autonomic psychophysiology predicts poor outcomes as well as drop-out in regards to exposure therapy, 3) improving adaptive autonomic psychophysiology may improve readiness for treatment & 4) incorporating autonomic psychophysiological measurement into exposure therapy sessions may enhance patient engagement and insight as well as therapist conceptualization. However, biofeedback is not commonly incorporated into exposure therapy. This webinar will present current theory and evidence around exposure therapy, make the case for biofeedback as a synergistic complement to exposure therapy & present practical suggestions about how to blend these evidence-based treatments.

What can I expect to learn:

  1. Understand evidence-based applications for exposure therapy and how the inhibitory
learning model of exposure therapy supports incorporating biofeedback
  2. Appreciate the ways in which biofeedback can improve underlying safety learning neural
processes through inhibitory learning and adaptive interoception
  3. Identify how baseline, maladaptive autonomic physiology negatively impacts exposure
    therapy outcomes
  4. Describe the psychophysiological concomitants of anxiety activation and reduction that
    help guide exposure sessions
  5. Learn two fundamental clinical applications for biofeedback within exposure therapy (1: HRV /
respiration biofeedback prior to treatment & 2: incorporating skin conductance & temperature
    during exposure
  6. Appreciate the ways in which cultural factors intersect with a blended biofeedback – exposure
    treatment
